AS3 is a haptic transposition
kit for airplane pilots, augmented and virtual reality environments
AS3 provides an Augmented
Reality Tactile Environment where live airframe aerodynamic feedback
is functionally mapped over the pilot's body tactile sense. Managing
functional tactile mapping of a technological structure and transposing
this mapping on human body means expanding the physical boundaries
of the body to those of the structure

Work on AS3 has been carried out with personal means since 1995 and
included building up literature on sensors, actuators and theoretical
issues, design and realisation of extremely low cost boundary layer
sensors according to different sensing strategies, experimental trials of sensors on a wing section mounted on a car (used as a "reverse" wind tunnel), rough
in-flight evaluation of sensors on a hang-glider wing, lab testing of
prototype actuators, design and architecture of a feedback suit (not
yet realised). Two patents have been granted on a lengthy and
costly process.
An astonishing amount of time and resources have been personally
dedicated to develop teamwork, academic and industrial
interaction, including travelling to NAMRL
in Pensacola, FL, US in 1999, to Paris Bourget aerospace fair in 2001
and 2003, uncounted number of academic and industrial contacts, ..,
with peak feedbacks like the followings
- Capt. Angus Rupert from NAMRL in
1999, principal investigator in their TSAS project (Tactile
Situation Awareness System) was extremely kind and friendly with
me, but had no funds or way to help me advance the project/collaborate
with me
- Boeing/BAeSystems in Paris Bourget 2001
received AS3 documentation from me, this information progressed in
internal evaluations and disappeared to my tracking
- A project manager from Alenia at Bourget 2003
received from me a good number of academical references and ideas on a
virtual feedback device for a system they were developing, which i
provided in a open collaborative effort, getting a literal two words
written answer from him: "Grazie, Domenico", which means "thank you"
followed by his name "Domenico".
- When looking in 2003 for a thesis topic to
follow my master in Cognitive Science in Paris, i proposed to work on
my AS3 patent to Professor Kevin O' Regan, Paris 5 University -who
is concerned with sensory substitution- getting a good laugh in answer.
I ended delivering a full abstract work concerning "Subject-Object entanglement in information measure" with professor Giuseppe Longo, ENS, Paris
- In 2008 Dr. Christopher G. Prince from Minnesota Duluth University
(US) found my page and kindly contacted me to conduct reseach in
an affiliate optics on their "Fly By Feel"
project they started in 2006. At present time work is being organised
in remote: monitoring students and designing solutions for
actuators and sensors.
